Anxiety and Depression love to spend time together. They also like to keep you all to themselves. They don’t want to share you with the outside world. So they force you to withdraw from or avoid situations. They make you believe that the only way to deal with potentially stressful situations is to avoid them.
Anxiety uses the tactic of filling your mind with all of the potential things that could go wrong. These anxious thoughts can be so overwhelming and you can become so preoccupied by the possible negative consequences that you withdraw and become isolated.
Depression prefers a different approach. Depression makes you believe that you will fail and that will feel too painful. This means that you don’t even try. By not trying, you avoid the situation but this also reinforces the feeling that you are incapable and won’t be able to cope. Making you even less likely to try next time.
Because Anxiety and Depression are best friends they like to work together for maximum impact. Coping with the physical symptoms of anxiety can cause you to feel more depressed. Feeling depressed can lead to increased feelings of anxiety. Both anxiety and depression can cause problems with: Sleep, lack of motivation , concentration, appetite, isolation. The overlapping of symptoms can make it difficult to understand whether you have anxiety, depression or both.
It is common to question yourself and your ability to cope. Anxiety and depression sap both your self -esteem and confidence. This can often lead to a reluctance to seek help. Anxiety tells you it will go wrong. Depression tells you you’ll be no good at seeking help. That you won’t be able to cope, that it will be too painful. They may be best friends but they’re wrong. You can do it. Things can be different.
